Heed These Pointers to Make the Most of Your Appointment

So you've made the decision to get a tattoo. That’s great! Now what? Why, it’s time to set up a tattoo appointment, of course. This initial part of the tattooing process is just as important as getting the actual piece, so be sure to start off on the right foot.

Finding Your Tattoo Artist

Looking for an artist who is capable of completing your tattoo takes time and a bit of patience—it should, at least. Start things off by viewing an artist’s portfolio either online or in-person, for this is a good way to get an idea about the type of work he or she can do. Some artists specialize in a particular area of tattoo work, so if you are looking for something in particular—such as a portrait piece or an abstract work—it is best to seek out an artist who can best suit your needs.

If you’re struggling to find a reputable tattoo artist or shop, simply ask around. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to find a great artist and/or shop. It’s also a good idea to have a clear idea about what you want your ink to look like when you call an artist to set up your tattoo appointment. Time is of the essence for an artist, so it’s very helpful to walk into your tattoo appointment having a solid idea about what you want and where you want it. Feel free to bring any sketches or images with you to this appointment.

Your Initial Tattoo Appointment

It is during the first tattoo appointment that your artist will discuss your ideas with you and provide an estimate for completion time and cost. Please remember that these are only estimates and are subject to change. Note that the artist will not be able to discuss the logistics of your tattoo via email or over the phone, as there is a lot of information to discuss, such as size, placement, color and your own personal expectations.

Getting a tattoo is a very involved process. Be sure to keep this idea in mind when scheduling your tattoo appointment because your artist's time is just as valuable as your own. If you are out of town and/or unable to complete an in-person consultation, the artist will give his or her due diligence to assist you via other communication methods, such as email, texting or phone calls. At the time when you book your tattoo appointment, you may be required to make a small deposit to secure your appointment time. Generally, this deposit will be subtracted from the price of your tattoo on your appointment day. However, if you do fail to give 24 to 48 hours’ notice of cancellation, you will likely forfeit this deposit.

When You Get to Your Appointment

Arrive a few minutes early to your tattoo appointment to allow plenty of time to complete the pre-tattoo paperwork; be sure to have your ID ready. When your artist is ready for you, he or she will call you back to the tattooing station and prepare your skin for tattooing. It’s a good idea to discuss any last-minute changes or ideas with your artist at this time, as this will be the last opportunity to amend your design. As work begins on your tattoo, remember that your artist likely has another appointment scheduled after you. This being the case, it is helpful for you to do your best to sit still and avoid any unnecessary interruptions to allow your artist to work his or her artistic magic and bring your ideas to life.

Further, if you walk into a tattoo studio wanting to get inked the same day, keep the complexity of the tattoo you want to a minimum. Most studios that serve clients on a predominantly appointment-only basis have little time between tattoo appointments to complete walk-in tattoos. Having a clear idea of what tattoo you want and where you want it placed will help in this situation. Do not be offended if the artist does not have the time to complete your tattoo, especially if it is a large, complex piece. Take pride in knowing that your artist wants to give every client the best possible tattoo experience and leave you happy and satisfied.
