Baths and Fresh Tattoos Do Not Mix

Tattoos are beautiful, oftentimes expensive pieces of art, so it’s highly important to take care of them—especially during the first few weeks after getting them. To ensure the healing process goes smoothly, it’s vital to follow the aftercare instructions your artist gives you. That being said, every reputable artist knows you shouldn’t take a bath after getting a tattoo, so he or she should definitely include this bit of information when giving aftercare instructions. But does this mean you can’t get your tattoo wet at all? Absolutely not.

Getting Your Tattoo Wet

While some people may think that it’s a no-no to get their tattoos wet in any form or fashion for the first few weeks after getting them, this is totally false. Since your tattoo is, at its core, an open wound, it is essential for you to keep it clean and allow it to breathe. You must be sure to wash it with antibacterial soap a couple of times a day for the first few weeks following your tattoo appointment and follow the proper aftercare protocol according to your tattoo artist. However, if you’re one who enjoys a bath from time to time, just be sure not to take a bath after getting a tattoo; it could do way more harm than good.

Taking a Bath After Getting a Tattoo

Since your tattoo is an open wound prior to fully healing, submerging it in standing water (e.g., water in pools, hot tubs and bathtubs) can cause infection because this type of water is full of potentially harmful bacteria that can easily penetrate your healing tattoo. In addition to not taking a bath after getting a tattoo, you should avoid swimming, soaking in a Jacuzzi or submerging your tattoo under water.

It is perfectly safe to shower, though. Just be sure to pat your tattoo dry with a non-fluffy towel or allow it to air dry when you’re finished. If you do, however, find yourself in a situation where getting your tattoo wet is unavoidable (i.e., other than washing or showering), simply wash it with antibacterial soap and allow it to air dry for the best results.
